Gordes

Picturesque Gordes is one of the most beautiful towns in Provence. Access to the town takes local roads through poppies, lavender and wheat fields. The town is located on a hill and it will impress you with unique charm of architecture.

Walking between tall houses of white and grey stone and the tiny streets will make you feel that you are in different time.

Nobody will stay indifferent of old doorways, arcades and lively colours of front of the house. Those are usually adorned with ivy and flourishing climbing plants that are recognizable beauty of the Provence.

The centre of the town is very alive, but if you go astray to the narrow streets of Gordes you will find tranquillity and an intimate atmosphere. If you climb to the top of the town you will see a magnificent panorama of the valley of Luberon: green fields blended with yellow and purple of sunflowers and lavenders.

In Gordes, fragrances from the perfumery and local product shops spreads through street and embrace the entire town. Gordes has a lot of charming restaurants where you can taste amazing French cuisine and famous French vines.

Village des Bories

Approximately ten kilometres from Gordes is the Village des Bories, an open-air museum of 20 or so dry-stone huts built by the technique of dry masonry. In the past those little round huts were used on a seasonal basis by shepherdess or hunters  like agricultural outhouses.

The huts are from the 17-th century but many of them are still well preserved. In those huts the temperature is very pleasant, about 20 C while there are 10 C more outside.

The huts were located in the fields of olive trees and laurel leafs. On the way back, following the road to Gordes through colourful fields, we had a great ride next to cherry plantations.

Abbey of Senanque

Notre Dame de Senanque is a Cistercian abbey. It is located in the middle of valley, surrounded by fields. In front of abbey of Senanque is a beautiful field of lavender what makes it even more magical. The atmosphere around and in the abbey is very intimate because of valley and rural life tranquillity, the spirit of the past and amazing nature.

It was founded in 12th century. Cistercian monks still live there and produce honey, liquors and lavender essence. The abbey is very popular location for artists. Often painter communes spend time painting there. Abbey of Senanque is one of the most popular symbols of Provence. The motive of the abbey is often on postcards, many pictures and souvenirs.

 Roussillon

The village of Roussillon is located at one of the biggest ochre deposits in the world.

The impressive red cliffs are couple of minutes’ walk from the village. Walking on red cliffs and through the woods next to the cliffs is a unique experience, especially if you visited it before sunset when the colours are the most powerful. It was the middle of June time when flowers bloom the most.

When we were walking through the village, the atmosphere was amazing. The playful colours of flowers and flower fragrances followed us on streets full of local produced shops and several art galleries.

Cassis

Cassis is the charming harbour and fishing village, full of facades of pastel colours. Picturesque  harbour is full of small boats and cheerful people.

In the harbour we took a boat trip and set off for a roundtrip to the natural wonder, cliffs of Calanques.

It is narrow, steep-walled inlet that is developed in limestone. It is accessible only by boat or hiking by steep rocks. It is impressive to watch the turquoise colour of the sea and huge white rocks. Calanques is the place that will remind you how powerful is the strengths of the nature.

On a way back, we had a small sea adventure. The weather worsened, and waves increased substantially. Boat was completely splashed by the sea. It was fun, especially for kids on our boat.

After some time spent on the beach, the weather calmed down and we dine in one of the local restaurants before we left charming Cassis.

Gorge du Verdon

We were driving slowly through the mountain because the road was very dangerous, but we were prized by the spectacular sight of the canyon. There were a lot of  motorcycles who were enjoying dangerous ride through the canyon road. When we arrived, the prize was big when we saw Gorge du Verdon. The turquoise colour of the Verdon river and the lake left us breathless.

River Verdon flows into the lake where chaises, canoes and pedals can be ride. We’ve saw roe and eagles.

At the local restaurant on the lake of Gorge du Verdon the most popular gastronomic specialty were shellfish.

Aix-en-Provence

The typical Provencal town with narrow streets, full of colourful shops. The town is crowded with people, especially at the square. The kids were jumping and running around the tables, trying to catch pigeons.

The scent of lavender from the soap and perfume shop is something you will to experience at every corner. A lot of small workshops selling sweets and flax products. Aix-en Provence is known as being home to Cézanne and one of must-see places is the studio of Paul Cézanne.

It is located on the first floor of the house. It’s just one room, but full of inspiration.

Especially impressive was a huge window, taking most of the wall giving us the beautiful view on the greenery of the garden surrounding the house. It was exciting to see exposed skulls, dead nature and Cézanne’s huge easels.

Visit we finished next day eating the breakfast in garden of the hotel at the summer Provence morning.

Fragrances of flowers, warm croissant and aromatic coffee will stay in our memories for long time.

Saint Paul de Vence

One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, Saint Paul is located on a hill behind Nice. Old town is full of galleries and art studios. The narrow stone streets, the sea view, the facades of the houses where the flowers flourished, and the pastel colours of the shawls makes this village unique beauty.  The smell of lavender, soaps and perfumes still follows us. The fragrances permeate the breathing air of the city and the Provence. Summer time in Provence was an unforgettable experience, full of flower’s fragrances and the lively colours of yellow, red, and violet fields, that gave it a special charm.
